Ikarus: December 2009
The hopes that the weakened Ikarus would be able to resume circling over the central Swiss mountains were dashed in December 2009. Despite intensive care in the Natur- und Tierpark Goldau Ikarus, sadly, died. An infection in the adrenal gland and heart muscle weakened the bird considerably and, finally, a liver collapse led to the death of the young bird. This news is very distressing. Luckily, however, the mortality rate of Bearded Vultures living in the wild in Switzerland is low. Due to this, the Stiftung Pro Bartgeier is sure that there will soon be other Bearded Vultures spotted flying over the central Swiss mountains .
